I hear a lot of people saying: “I need to get on Twitter” or “I’ve got to learn how to market on Facebook”. Well, that’s all jim-dandy and those are great things to do, but do you have an overall marketing game plan?
Let’s say that you have a million people following you on Twitter. Now what?
Maxed out your Facebook friends? Okey dokey. What good is that doing you?
The tools (Twitter, Facebook, Youtube, etc) are useless without a strategy.
The fundamental strategy behind my game plan is to build trust and influence with people in my niche by providing a continuous flow of high quality content, training, help and guidance.
Here’s how I implement my plan:
- Update my home base (my blog) with great content on a consistent basis (for me, that’s 3-4 times a week).
- Let my Twitter followers and my Facebook friends know about my update. (It’s not about learning Twitter or Facebook. It’s about telling your followers and friends about your great blog content.
- Let my opt in subscribers know about my update.
- Respond to comments from readers and subscribers. (Uplift, encourage and offer guidance)
- Occasionally let people know I am in business.
Number 5 is a tricky one so let me explain:
Everything I have ever done online since 2003 has been directly related to building my Network Marketing business.
Why do I give away my 7 MLM Web Secrets for free, when I could be charging for that content?
Because I know that roughly 25% of the people that opt in to my secrets are not currently involved with a Network Marketing company. Yes, you read that right. 25%! So 25% of the people that opt in to my list are potential business partners for me in my Network Marketing business. I am a Network Marketer first, in fact, I even do (GASP!) live meetings from time to time.
I also have a link at the top of my blog that says “Opportunity”. I see too many people keeping their Network Marketing business a secret when their business is the main reason they do what they do. It’s never a good idea to push your opportunity down people’s throats but keeping it a secret is not good either. This is certainly a topic that we will need to dig deeper in to in the future.
For now, have you ever drawn out your game plan?

You are 100% correct. Look at a soccer team that has no strategy.
They have all the skills; they can run, dribble the ball, pass the ball, and kick the ball.
Now you throw 11 of them out on a field and say “go win.”
They would have no chance if they didn’t know where each person should be on the field, or what to do with the ball once they got it. They would most definitely lose.
It’s the exact same thing with our business.
I would go even further and say not only do you need an overall strategy, but you also need a daily strategy in order to truly be successful. Think of it like soccer practice

Ty,
This post was right on time. Being a baby boomer, sometimes all of the emphasis on social media doesn’t seem to make a lot of sense if you’re doing it, just for the sake of saying you’re on Twitter & FB.
But Social Media with a purpose and a strategy – that could be the “tipping point” for my biz. Thanks so much!

Hey Ty,
I have to say that is exactly what I do and follow. I’ll tell you that it hasn’t failed me yet. It’s a plan that works only if you work it.
Nothing is failed proof. But that plan works!

If you don’t have a plan, you have nothing.
I also think people view social media as their lead generation cash cow. – Wrong way to view it!
For me social media is about building relationships, offering transparency and getting to know people a more. If I get a lead out of that great, but I do not base the bread and butter of my business around social media. (that’s just crazy)
I definitely agree that your business shouldn’t be hidden. The option to join you should be there for people to do just that IF THEY WANT TO.
Shoving your business down peoples throat has never worked, has it?
Awesome value as always Ty.

Hello Ty. I read a blog post a couple days ago written by you about this Google slap thing. I was wondering if you could provide a little more insight about this mess? I am just starting out with internet marketing and i have recently read some books that highly recommends a person to start using and learning Google ad words. Is there still serious money involved and how would you recommend starting off my game plan? If you wouldn’t mind could you give me your opinion?

Hey Todd, I use Google Adwords. In fact, I started using Google Adwords in 2003-2004, so I’m not saying don’t do it. I’m basically saying you have very little control over what Google decides is “OK” on Google Adwords. I believe that the long term “play” in marketing online is having your own home base aka blog that you have 100% control over (called self hosting). That’s not blogspot or wordpress.com.

Eggs in one basket is never a good idea.
I think if used smartly people can benefit from all forms of marketing, but each one has to be used in the right manner otherwise it will be a waste of time.

Hey Ty, I like your last part of your post.”5. Occasionally letting people know you are in business”.
Hah! People do 2 things, which is to let people know they are in business every 5 mins on twitter and facebook (somehow spamming!), or never let people know they are in network marketing.
There are people who are in network marketing, just to sell network marketing affiliate programs. What’s your take on this Ty?

Well, I can’t make choices for people, but I know that the top internet marketing leaders in the Network Marketing field that I know personally still build their own business. (Ann Sieg and Mike Dillard). I don’t remind people about my business every 5 minutes. I try to give great value and a gentle reminder once in a while that I have a business if they are looking for one.

Your blog is your “living room” invite people over to see you and yes see your business.
Once you have them in your “living room” goal is to keep them there as long as possible, and offer ways and reasons for them to come back.
If you have a dinner party and it sucks, no one will come back,, right? But if you have a kick ass party, people will be begging for an invite and friends will tell friends about the crazy fun parties you throw..
treat your blog the same way.

Hi Ty, thanks for sharing this post. Having a gameplan and a strategy in your business is a must if you want to succeed in the long run. If you don’t know how to put content on a consistent basis, then there is no way you can go out on facebook and twitter to market. You have no business there if you dont put out valuable content to your niche. On my side, what I do is I follow my marketing schedule and marketing guide and focus on my gameplan.
Also just wanted to add this that having an OPPORTUNITY tab on your blog is great if your blog is the system you use to build your network marketing business. But if lets say you are leveraging another proven system, you may want to funnel them first to your affiliate programs for added value before you want to funnel them to your back end….. Just my 2 cents

Hi Ty,
Great plan.
I believe too many network marketers are getting stuck in the technicalities of Internet marketing instead of just networking with people. The combination of blogging and social media as you outline in your plan if done properly and consistently is an ideal way to network effectively and you don’t have to be an Internet technical wizard to understand either of them.

Hey Ty
I just read this again because this is such a challenge for me. There is SO much to take in and so many different takes on “how to”….that it’s really hard to stop learning for a moment and plan out a strategy.
Stopping isn’t the hard part it’s planning versus doing that’s hard.
The ideal is learn, plan and do right, all at once, but if you don’t stop to plan and just “do” then a lot of your action is random and therefore potentially wasted.
Enough commenting, I think I’ll draw up a weekly/daily plan!
Thanks

Hey Ty,
It’s really great to see a network marketer who actually names their business opportunity – that makes 2 of us (?). Many people say not to do it but surely if someone believes in their business, is proud of the products or services it provides then why keep it a secret? I received a prospecting call some months back from someone who was leaving the ’9 to 5′ company we both worked for, she wouldn’t name the MLM buisness or the products – I politely declined.
Regards, Mike.
