As I sat down to write this blog post, something profound occurred to me. TyTribble.com has two different types of readers.
- Established marketers with a list and a blog who are looking to gather a new nugget of information that they might not have considered.
- New marketer who is just trying to get something (anything) going online.
So, I want to make sure that this post has value for both camps. Let’s see how I do.
You might have heard a saying among Internet Marketing types that the “money is in your list”.
Tips For The New MLM Internet Marketer
First, let’s see if we can help the new marketer by answer the following question:
What’s in Tarnation is a list, do I need one and how do I get one? (heh…never thought I would use the word Tarnation in a blog post did ya?)
If your blog is your home base online, the purpose of your blog is to funnel traffic to your list. You begin to build your list by creating something that people (in your niche) want, need or desire. In more simple terms, you trade something of value such as a series of videos or an eBook or in my case, Secret Internet Marketing Files for something of value from your reader, a name and email address.
Internet Marketers sometimes call this an ethical bribe. In another one of my projects, you trade me your email address and I will give you 3 hours of video training on the subject of Blogging for Prospects for free. Yes, I’m bribing you to give me your email address with 3 hours of great video content. You want to watch the videos? Enter your email address cowgirl. = )
Then once you have captured that email address you begin the process of communicating with your readers, building relationships, offering them value and gaining trust. This is where an autoresponder comes in. Your autoresponder is where you manage your list.
Tips For The Seasoned MLM Internet Marketer
If you’ve been told that the “money is in the list”, you’ve been told wrong. The money is not in the list. The money is in the relationship that you have with your list. This is why (if you subscribe to my MLM Web Secrets), you will see me sending email messages that are specifically written to engage the reader and get a response….start a conversation and believe it or not, I answer all of my responses (yes, it might take me weeks on occasion, but everyone get’s an answer).
Would you like to know the number one most opened email subject line that I use with my list?
It might surprise you…it’s:
“John, Where are you from?”

Ty, thanks you for the reminders. It seems I get wrapped up with one small aspect and forget the rest. Thanks again. =-)

Stick with the basics and you will win.
great content – social media traffic – build relationships – offer value

Ty, you’re right on with both sets of tips. We all need to remember that Network Marketing is first and foremost a relationship business. Giving a bribe to start a relationship is not all bad. Both parties gain something. None of us can hide and seclude ourselves and expect to have a successful business. That is what the telephone and email is for. Too many times we don’t use either and wonder why we aren’t successful.

Hey Ty,
Great reminder that the quality of your List is based on the relationship you’ve created. Everything starts with relationship building because every business is about people first. With every List, you’ll always have people that will buy from you and those that may never buy from you.

You got that right, Janette. it’s the main thing I always to get across to the newest person…the secret is not Twitter or WordPress or YouTube or Facebook, the secret is how you engage people and build relationships across all of those platforms.

Great job Ty. I think you accomplished your goal of targeting both camps!
I could not agree with you more about the relationship aspect. To many people say the money is in the list, but really it is in the relationship. That is why spammers don’t make the most money
Again great post! Thanks for posting it.

Ty, great values and to the point. I have read many courses and books even online or offline it stated that you got to built relationship or rapport. One person who interact with you better then thousands which you do not engage in.

Hey Ty,
Too many individuals try to say, “money is in the list.” Well, you do have to build a list…Maybe, what they were trying to say is “There is money in a list with relationship”

Hey Ty,
Besides what I learn from you about blogging what I have learned the most from you has been as a result of being on your list.
Your approach is totally unique. I remember getting the “Marcus, Where are you from?” email. It was as if I was hypnotized to reply.
It’s a funny thing, we keep on “preaching” the value of conversation as opposed to pitching when it comes to prospecting yet most of us, myself included, allow our email relationships to be far too one sided.
Thanks for the great lessons.

Hey Ty, As a newbie thanks for taking us into account when writing for your blog. I loved the honesty about ‘bribing’ people for their email address to build your list. We all use ‘bribes’, we know it, our viistors know it but people don’t usually say it – good to see.
Thanks, Mike.

Great post Ty, thanks! Your reminder about the link between your list, and the relationship with the people on your list, is a good one to keep in the forefront of all internet and other marketing efforts. We still need to focus on the human element and make a real connection to build trust and increase sales. It’s easy to forget that there is a real person behind that @ sign. And I love your #1 subject line.. very enticing!

Some folks are so hung up on SEO, that they forget HEO (Human Emotion Optimization). You can SEO the world out of a bunch of words and get traffic, but the traffic is not worth a dime unless you connect.
[Reply]
You’re right, Ty. The money is in the RELATIONSHIP that you have with your list.
I have to say that you seem to have a knack for that. Most of the posts I read don’t have the personal touch that make yours easy to read. I’m a student of copywriting and–as easy as it might sound–writing in a personal voice is very difficult for most people.
One of the best pieces of advice I ever got is to read what I write OUT LOUD before I send it. It helps a lot. Makes it clear where I sound unnatural. Also makes it easier to spot my typos and bad grammar.
Thanks again.

Yeah. Funny and empathetic. I wrote a post once on the part that “love” plays in business. I think it takes a willingness to love others to be able to relate to them and communicate with them online.
It’s a lot like “real” life.
Maybe it IS “real” life.

Ty,
Thanks for the newbie portion of your post. I am a little over a year into my first network marketing venture and want to expand it online. I know virtually zero when it comes to how to get started, right down to the terminology/language that is used. The more “internet 101 mlm marketing” I can find, the better. Thanks for thinking of us “babes in the woods!” Btw I have gone through your MLM Blog Secrets and am in the middle of MLM Blog Code. It’s been good so far and I’m hoping to get through the rest of it this weekend.

[Reply]
Ty Tribble Reply:

Tony, I would only promote affiliate products that give me access to the email address of those who opt in and contact information of those who buy. In my world, everything flows towards my Network Marketing business. if I can find value for my long term residual income by promoting an affiliate product, I don’t do it….no matter how much money I can make in the short term.

Great post Ty,
I like the fact that you have presented this post to both established network marketers and newbies.
You can’t be more right in you message here. It is essential to build that relationship. It’s not just a matter of getting the email address and then begin your marketing right away.
If you want the sales, you need to build the trust and reputation with your prospect first.
