Leads: Are You Harnessing Your Horse After Your Wagon?

Quality Leads Are Vital To Your Success But Are You Putting The Cart Before The Horse?

I was looking up the origin of “the cart before the horse” and found that the Dutch actually have a slightly different version…”harnessing the horse after the wagon”.  I kind of like that a little better (for no real reason) but it should also be noted that the Dutch also brought us the yacht, the stock exchange, telescope, submarine, fire hose, four wheel drive, the CD and of course the windmill.

God Bless the Dutch.

The “I Need 20 Leads A Day Or I’m A Failure” Myth

Now let’s talk about leads.  First, let’s squash myth that you need to have 20 leads a day to build a business.  Don’t believe everything you read online, unless it’s written on my blog…then believe it all. = )

I don’t care how many gurus talk about creating 20 to 50 leads a day, you flat out don’t need that many to have success. There are certainly different levels of activity when discussing building a Network Marketing business, so let’s focus right now on the folks who really want to make 2012 a great year.  For those of you who are in less of a hurry, feel free to dial down the numbers.

I actually like to call my leads “potential business partners” or “potential customers”.  The reason has to do with how my mind picks up on my internal language.  So yes, you absolutely need people to talk to in order to make your business a success. But don’t “harness your horse after your wagon”. (heh)

5 Quality Conversations A Day

Rather than concern yourself with how many leads you have (because it doesn’t really matter), how about making a decision to have 5 quality conversations about your business every day.

But there is something that actually comes before the leads, quality conversations and even the decision to take action…your dream.

Some of you might think that I am taking a short ride to Cheesyland when I talk about your dream, but your dreams and goals are probably the most important part of the success puzzle.  They are the fuel that will move you forward. I devoted an entire chapter in my book (Double Your Income) to dreams and goals.

Once you know what you want to accomplish (a worthy dream or goal) then you get started with the formula:

(Skills + Leads) x Action = Financial Success

I say Leads in the formula because you have to have them, but the real secret is the Action.

There is not a single person reading the blog post that can’t find 5 people to talk to a day about their business once they make the decision to talk to 5 people a day.  I know that sounds like a riddle, but it’s really not.  If you decide to take Action, you will find the leads.

You can start today by asking a very simple question:

“I was on a guy’s blog today who wrote a book called “Double Your Income” (due out next month-ish)…it’s about creating a second stream of income without getting a second job.  Have you ever thought about doing something like that?”

Who do you ask?

Five People. I don’t care where you find them.  Warm Market, Facebook, Professionals or “that guy”at Starbucks.

Another Way To Look At It

Let’s pretend that I offered you a job and it pays you $10,000 a month.

Here is your job description:

  • Have 5 quality conversations a day about your business.
  • Invite those who show a want, need or desire to learn more at a presentation (online or offline).
  • Follow up with those who show interest, getting them in touch with one of your team leaders via sit down meeting or 3 way call.
  • Develop your skills.

That’s it.  I don’t even care how many hours a week it takes you (10, 20, 30 hours?) and I will pay you $10,000 a month to do it.

Would you find people to call if your $10,000/month depended on it? Of course you would!

Yet you can make that money or more if you do what I just described.  You see, the challenge with leads is a mental one, but it is one that you can overcome.

I look forward to seeing your results!

  1. Ty Tribble – this is a fantastic fundamentally sound article, Thank you. Your formula shows off the ability of the right actions to take a plan, activate it and create success. It's rock solid. Thanks for leading!

  2. Hey Ty, I totally agree with the post, well except for just talking to 5 people at random. I'd rather be speaking with people interested in what I'm offering because it gives me an edge or posture, and it saves me time. It's like I'm the driver of the horse with the cart and I know who with and where I want to go; so why talk to 5 random people because they 're not really interested in at least going the same way I'm going?

  3. Hi, Ty,

Thank you for bringing us back to the basics. I totally agree with you that you have to contact potential business partners or customers every day. It is the actual contact with many other people that make our business grow. There are people who like to do this step in the real world… and others who would like to contact others online. The key is to CONTACT them.

Our team has regular in-home meetings that has amazing energy! I also hand out book or audio CD to others to find out their level of interest. It is a proven success strategy 🙂

  4. I don’t think I said talk to five people at ramdon, but yeah it’s better than talking to no one but making sure they are completely qualified.
